A ride like no other, the Kawarau Gorge Trail is not for the faint hearted but will be an exceptionally rewarding experience.

Literately forged by the elements, the Kawarau Gorge connects Central Otago with the Southern Lakes Region. Pounamu hunters, gold diggers, explorers and early settlers have traversed through this rugged terrain in search of kai, mana and wealth.
Kawarau Gorge Trail
Construction started on the Kawarau Gorge Trail in 2023 taking 3 years to complete. The trail provides a passage of adventure through time and history. Evident will be the mahi and endeavour required to complete New Zealand's most ambitious bicycle trail. Although not technical riding, the trail is a remote and challenging, requiring riders to be fully independent and self sufficient. This includes carrying water and food, warm clothing and have the experience to repair your bicycle if required. No rider assistance, or vehicle access is available through the central section.
Kawarau Gorge Explorer
The Kawarau Trail provides a great ride for returning or experienced riders, so let Arrowtown Bike Hire take care of the basics for you. Starting near Cromwell, finish your ride in one of the many famous Gibbston Valley wineries, or challenge yourself to make it all the way to Arrowtown.
Kawarau Gorge Explorer includes:
*Electric bike hire: Front suspension with helmet
*Transport from our Arrowtown base to our Cromwell starting point.
*Safety equipment including tubes, first aid, satellite communication device.
*Collection from the Gibbston Valley back to Arrowtown if you run out of puff.
*Queenstown and accommodation door to door transfers by arrangement.
Departs Arrowtown 9am. On the trail and riding by 10am. Aprox 35km of riding depending where you finish. Gibbston to Arrowtown shuttles available from 3pm.
